Barcelona could pip Liverpool to Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim

Barcelona are racing to sign Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim as their new manager, according to The Independent. The Catalans want the Portuguese coach in place because many European elites are now after his signature.

One of the clubs in for the former Braga coach is our very own Liverpool. After missing out on Xabi Alonso, who decided to stay at Bayer Leverkusen for another season, the former Benfica star is now the top candidate for the Merseyside job.

Many expected Liverpool to pip Bayern Munich to hire Alonso, but he decided to stay on and continue the fantastic project he had started in Germany.

Alonso’s decision to stay meant Liverpool had to switch to plan b, Amorim, but we could now find Barcelona in the way.

Chelsea are also interested in the 39-year-old. They had him on their radar before appointing Mauricio Pochettino and could return for him if things do not work out with the Argentine manager.

Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes and Fenway Sports Group’s CEO of football, Michael Edwards, have to be fast in their decision-making or risk losing out on their second managerial target in weeks.

If the Catalans manage to take Amorim before the Reds can act, there are still some exciting options on the table.

Brighton & Hove Albion boss Roberto De Zerbi has impressed European heavyweights with his tactical wizardry and achievements with the East Sussex club.

He took them to the Europa League for the first time in their history, and they are just six points away from Manchester United in sixth place this term.

Another option is Inter Milan maestro Simone Inzaghi, whose side sit 14 points clear at the top of the Serie A standings despite losing several stars like Milan Skriniar, Romelu Lukaku, and Andre Onana over the summer.

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann is an outside candidate but could come into the fray if Liverpool miss out on Amorim.
