Cody Gakpo’s Euro 2024 display hands Liverpool huge transfer headache amid Gordon & Summerville interest

Liverpool attacker Cody Gakpo became the top joint goalscorer at the 2024 European Championship (three goals) with a sublime strike to give the Netherlands a 1-0 lead over Romania in their round-of-16 clash.

The 25-year-old took on two Romanian defenders, cutting in before blasting a lethal shot beyond Florian Nita in goal.

Gakpo’s showings on the left side of the attack for the Netherlands at Euro 2024 have reminded the world what he is like at his very best.

He didn’t stop there, providing a glorious assist for Donyell Malen’s first goal. He showed touch, relentlessness, balance, and skill to deliver the pass for Malen to stick the ball into the back of the net.

The former PSV Eindhoven man is better on the left flank, where he can cut in to shoot, assist, or combine with teammates. He should not be isolated up front as a striker, left to feed on crumbs.

New Liverpool boss Arne Slot, who knows Gakpo from their time in the Eredivisie, must take note immediately.

He may not be an elusive dribbler like Luis Diaz, but he carries a danger that can be devastating for the opposition.

Despite playing second fiddle to the Colombian on the left flank, Gakpo still delivered just as many Premier League goal contributions (13).

Interestingly, Gakpo’s form at Euro 2024 will give Liverpool a major headache heading into the summer transfer window.

The Reds are reportedly in the market for a left-sided attacker, with Leeds United’s Crysencio Summerville and Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon on their radar.

According to a report from De Telegraaf this afternoon, Liverpool enquired about Summerville’s situation.

Summerville caught the eye at Leeds last term, spearheading their campaign with 19 goals and nine assists (17 big chances created) in 44 Championship appearances.

Gordon was also electric for the Magpies last season, notching 11 goals and ten assists (16 big chances created) in 35 Premier League outings.

The lifelong fan was reportedly open to returning to Liverpool, but talks broke down over the weekend. The Reds remain interested in his services.

However, while Gordon and Summerville are promising recruits, Gakpo is already on Liverpool’s books and can be better than the pair if Slot trusts him as the starter for next season.

His performances at Euro 2024 showcased his ability to take on defenders, create chances, and score crucial goals.

If Gakpo can replicate his Netherlands form at Anfield, he would be far more impactful than Summerville or Gordon. Playing in his preferred left-sided attacking role, he can become a star for Liverpool.

Gakpo represents a much safer bet than unproven youngsters like Summerville and Gordon.

The upcoming season could be Gakpo’s breakout year at Liverpool, and Reds fans everywhere will be eagerly anticipating his return to Anfield.
