Liverpool confirm another addition a day after signing Milos Kerkez

Liverpool have added another goalkeeper to their ranks, taking the club’s total acquisition this summer to four.

The Merseyside outfit have confirmed that they are set to sign English goalkeeper Freddie Woodman on a free transfer, following the expiration of his contract with Championship side Preston North End.

The announcement comes a day after the club confirmed the signing of full-back Milos Kerkez from AFC Bournemouth.

Woodman made 138 appearances for Preston and was named their 2022/2023 Player of the Year.

He is expected to become Liverpool’s third-choice goalie, with Alisson Becker and Giorgi Mamardashvili being the first and second-choice goalies, respectively.

The 28-year-old is the third goalkeeper to move to Anfield this summer. The other two are Mamardashvili, who was signed from Valencia last summer, and Armin Pecsi.

He is expected to resume pre-season training with Arne Slot’s side next month.

Woodman started his career with Crystal Palace before joining Newcastle United’s academy in 2013. He made just nine first-team appearances for the Magpies.

After several loan spells, he finally left St. James’ Park in 2022 for Preston, where he quickly established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper.

In his three seasons at Deepdale, he made his fewest appearances last season, no thanks to his absence from the last eight Championship games.

He has played for England at every youth level, from the U16s to the U21s, but has yet to break into the Three Lions’ squad.

Woodman is now the latest addition to Liverpool’s goalkeeping department, which has undergone several changes this summer.

Caoimhin Kelleher has left for Brentford for an initial £12.5 million fee, after failing to displace Alisson as the club’s first-choice keeper.

Young goalies Jacob Poytress and Reece Trueman have also been released, while Czech Republic goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros has joined Dutch side Ajax on loan for the 2025/26 season.
