Liverpool handed Cody Gakpo injury boost ahead of Toulouse clash

Liverpool have been handed a major injury boost ahead of Thursday’s clash against Toulouse, with Cody Gakpo set to return after a spell on the sidelines.

The Netherlands international forward has not featured for the Reds since picking up an injury in the controversial 2-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at the end of last month.

Gakpo had cancelled out Heung-min Son’s opener with a late first-half strike but failed to emerge for the second 45 minutes, with Diogo Jota stepping in as a replacement.

The former PSV Eindhoven forward missed Liverpool’s subsequent three games in all competitions but has returned to full first-team training and could play a part in the midweek contest.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp also provided an update on defender Andrew Robertson, who sustained a nasty-looking shoulder injury while on international duty with Scotland.

Klopp confirmed that Robertson underwent a successful surgery and will begin his rehabilitation process immediately but did not provide a timeframe for his recovery.

However, the left-back is expected to spend a lengthy spell in the treatment room amid reports that he could miss up to three months of action.

“Robbo had surgery, and [it] all went well, as good as it could be, so the recovery starts after he wakes up,” Klopp said in his pre-match press conference

“I think it happened this morning. That’s it. We don’t know how long it will take or whatever, but the first step is done – that’s good.

“Cody is in full training now since Sunday, which means he is available for the squad. Whatever we do with that we will have to see, but that’s good as well.”

Klopp also confirmed that Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic have not rejoined training and will miss the match against Toulouse.

Liverpool welcome the Ligue 1 side to Anfield, looking to extend their three-match unbeaten streak and consolidate their position at the summit of their Europa League Group E.
