Liverpool to make one last attempt to bring back Michael Edwards to lead post-Klopp rebuild

Liverpool are making a renewed attempt to bring former sporting director Michael Edwards back to the club this summer, per Fabrizio Romano. 

The Reds are looking for a sporting director to lead the search for a new manager and help rebuild the squad and have turned to the highly sought-after recruitment chief. 

Current sporting director Jorg Schmadtke will leave at the end of the season, and the Merseysiders need an experienced head to fill the gap.

They reportedly have their sights set on Edwards, who walked away from the club in 2022 after 11 years of building Liverpool into a formidable force. Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), want to make one last attempt to bring him back to Anfield.

FSG want Edwards to take over football operations and put a new structure in place, including a new sporting director to take over after him, but he has shown no signs of saying yes to their proposal.

However, the Premier League table-toppers will try again.

This summer will be pivotal for the Reds, with the club set to lose manager Jurgen Klopp, who has decided to step down and take a break from football. 

There are also contract situations to sort out with Virgil Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold about to enter the final year of their deal. 

Mohamed Salah is in the same boat. He has interest from the Saudi Pro League, and there is a strong possibility he could leave this summer with a year left on his contract. 

This summer holds immense significance for Liverpool. Key decisions regarding the manager, player contracts and potential transfers must be made to ensure a smooth transition into the post-Klopp era.
