Liverpool slap £20m price tag on Dutch defender with Premier League & Bundesliga clubs interested

Liverpool reportedly value Dutch defender Sepp van den Berg at £20 million and are ready sell him this summer with Premier League and Bundesliga clubs circling, according to James Pearce.

Van den Berg spent last season on loan at Mainz 05, impressing as Bo Henriksen managed to steer the club from relegation.

The 22-year-old was a crucial player for the 05ers, helping them keep eight clean sheets in 33 Bundesliga appearances.

He won 62% of his duels in the German top flight, impressing with his aerial ability. He is in the 99th percentile for aerial duels won among defenders in the top five leagues.

Sepp is in the 85th percentile for clearances per 90 (5.04 per game) and makes 2.09 blocks per game, which puts him in the 98th percentile. He is also in the 75th percentile for interceptions, recording 1.36 per match.

Apart from his impressive defensive metrics, he has also shown a knack for goals, bagging three this term (he also missed three big chances).

However, Mainz are unlikely to be able to keep the starlet due to their financial situation, meaning other interested parties like Brentford, Southampton, and Wolfsburg can pounce.

Brentford suffered plenty of defensive injuries during the season and are keen on bolstering their rearguard to avoid a repeat this coming campaign.

Southampton are preparing for life in the top flight and have the Liverpool defender on their radar. Southampton and Liverpool have a fantastic relationship, having done more than £171 million in transfer transactions over the years.

Wolfsburg are also looking to strengthen their backline after a lacklustre campaign and will target a move for Van den Berg.

Liverpool are prepared to cash in on the defender, making a profit on the £4.4 million they paid for him in 2019 when he joined from PEC Zwolle.

The Reds will reinvest the money in signing another defender, with Joel Matip set to leave the club.
