Michael Edwards returns to Liverpool to lead post-Klopp era

Former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards has pulled off a surprise U-turn, rejoining the club in a newly created role as CEO of Football for Fenway Sports Group (FSG).

The Englishman returns amid transition for the Reds, with Edwards tasked with reshaping the club’s football operations post-Jurgen Klopp and overseeing FSG’s potential acquisition of another team.

Edwards masterminded Liverpool’s recent golden era but left the club in 2022. The Merseysiders have been trying to bring him back to the club, but he rejected an approach for the sporting director role in January.

However, this broader, more strategic role – encompassing both on-field success and FSG’s global ambitions – appears to have enticed him back.

His immediate priorities include appointing a new sporting director, with Richard Hughes (formerly of Bournemouth) heavily tipped for the role.

The pair have been friends for years and have professional admiration for each other. They will be tasked with replacing the charismatic Jurgen Klopp.

Bayer Leverkusen manager and former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has the German club on the verge of their first Bundesliga title and is the frontrunner for the managerial vacancy. There are other options on their shortlist, including Ruben Amorim and Roberto De Zerbi.

“The desire and persistence FSG showed was humbling,” Edwards remarked (via a press statement).

“Returning required fresh challenges. The commitment to acquire an additional club was a major factor. To stay competitive, we need to invest and expand the football portfolio.”

This move reflects FSG’s faith in Edwards, who left in 2022 after setting the club on a path to trophies with shrewd recruitment.

He reportedly spurned advances from Manchester United and Chelsea, opting instead for a consultancy role at Ludonautics. He’ll formally step down on June 1 to join FSG.

FSG President Mike Gordon hailed Edwards’ return. He labelled him one of the most formidable executive talents in world football.

This reunion promises a fascinating new chapter at Anfield, with Edwards shaping Liverpool’s future while potentially adding another club to FSG’s growing football empire.
