Liverpool have announced the signing of French striker Hugo Ekitike from German side Eintracht Frankfurt. The Reds will pay an initial fee of £69million with a potential £10m as add-ons.
Ekitike becomes the Reds’ second most expensive signing ever, with midfielder Florian Wirtz, who also joined this summer, being the only player to have cost more.
Newcastle United also made a €75m (£65m at current rates) offer for him, but their offer was turned down.
The 23-year-old enjoyed his most productive campaign last term, providing 15 goals and eight assists to help Frankfurt secure Champions League qualification. He was also named in the Bundesliga Team of the Season.
Ekitike began his career with French side Reims before moving to Paris Saint-Germain. He struggled with PSG and joined Frankfurt on loan in January 2024 before completing a permanent transfer to the club last summer.
He is the fourth signing of the Reds this summer and is now expected to join his new team-mates in Hong Kong for pre-season.
It remains to be seen whether he will feature when the Reds take on AC Milan in a friendly fixture on Saturday afternoon.
Despite four signings already, Liverpool are reportedly not done yet in the transfer window.
They have been linked with Real Madrid’s Rodrygo and Lyon’s young winger Malick Fofana due to the likely departures of Federico Chiesa, Darwin Nunez, and Luis Diaz, who has told the club he wants to leave.
They also want to sign a new centre-back, following the permanent transfer of Jarell Quansah to Bayer Leverkusen.
Liverpool will begin their Premier League campaign on August 15 against Bournemouth at Anfield.
