Southgate calls up Liverpool duo Jarell Quansah and Curtis Jones for England ahead of Euro 2024

Liverpool pair Jarell Quansah and Curtis Jones have made Gareth Southgate’s provisional 30-man squad for 2024 European Championship this summer, according to Paul Joyce.

Centre-back Quansah emerged from the academy this season as Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip struggled with injuries.

The 21-year-old has become a mainstay in the first team, partnering Virgil Van Dijk in the centre of defence. He has helped the Reds keep two clean sheets in 17 league appearances this term.

Quansah is a commanding defender in the air, winning 67% of his aerial duels. He is also quick on the ground, using his speed to stop and cut out dangerous attacks. He has won 60% of his ground duels.

The Warrington-born defender is also excellent on the ball, recording 4.74 progressive passes per 90. He attempts over 90 passes per game with 89.7% accuracy, emerging as one of the finest defensive talents in English football.

He netted his first goal for the club against Aston Villa and followed it with another against Wolverhampton Wanderers on the final matchday.

Due to injuries to key England defenders, Quansah has received a deserved inaugural call-up to the national team.

Teammate Jones has also received a surprise first call to represent the Three Lions. He made 23 appearances for Liverpool in the Premier League this season, recording a goal and an assist.

Southgate dropped former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson for the tournament and has sifted through new options to replace the veteran with 81 caps.

Jones is an excellent box-to-box midfield option for Southgate as they prepare for the showpiece in Germany.

England are looking for their first continental title and are one of the favourites to lift the trophy. The Three Lions start their campaign against Serbia on June 16.

It is worth noting that Southgate must reduce his squad to 26 men before the tournament, and some players can still be axed.
