Virgil van Dijk unsure over Liverpool future following Klopp exit

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk will wait until the club sorts out their managerial situation before deciding on his future.

The 32-year-old is into the final 18 months of his deal with the Reds, and there are growing concerns about whether he will renew his commitment to the club.

However, the former Southampton and Celtic centre-back believes the club’s energy will be focused on securing a successor for Jurgen Klopp, who will leave the Merseyside club this summer.

Apart from Klopp, his coaching staff will also follow him out of the club, leaving a gaping hole in the dugout that Liverpool must fill.

Liverpool are also looking for a new sporting director, as Jorg Schmadtke will leave his role at the end of this season.

These potential changes mean that Van Dijk’s contract renewal will take a backseat as he analyses the club’s direction before he ponders over a new deal.

“That’s a big question – well, I don’t know,” the Netherlands international responded when asked if he will play a part in the next chapter of Liverpool’s story post-Klopp (via The Athletic).

“The club will have a big job on their hands. That is well known. To replace the manager and replace not only the manager, the staff are leaving too, and there are so many things that will change.

“So, the club has a big job on its hands, and I am very curious which direction that will go in. But when that will be announced we will see our situation. I can’t say now.”

Van Dijk is one of three key Liverpool players heading into the final 18 months of their contracts alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah.

All three players have been crucial cogs in Klopp’s teams, and fans will be desperate for the club to hold onto them amidst the mass exodus set to take place at Merseyside this summer.
