Liverpool have announced via the club’s official website the signing of striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United in a deal worth £125 million, making the Sweden international the most-expensive signing in the Premier League history.
Isak joins Liverpool on a six-year deal and becomes their tenth signing this summer, following the arrivals of Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Giovanni Leoni, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Armin Pecsi, Freddie Woodman, Hugo Ekitike and Will Wright.
The Reds had been working on a deal to sign the 25-year-old since the start of the summer, and initially had a £110m bid rejected by Newcastle, who wanted £150m.
The Magpies had also wanted to sign a replacement for Isak before selling him to Liverpool, but following the arrival of Nick Woltemade from VfB Stuttgart, they opened negotiations again with the Merseyside outfit.
Isak joined Newcastle from Real Sociedad in the summer of 2022 in a deal worth £63m, making him their record signing at thetime, but the record has now been broken by Woltemade, who was signed for £69m.
The Sweden international scored 23 goals in 34 Premier League games last term, finishing behind new team-mate Mohammed Salah on the top-scorer’s list.
According to DataMb, he ranked first for goals, non-penalty goals, goal contributions and touches in the box among strikers in the Premier League last term. At the same time, he was placed second for expected goals and progressive actions and third for goal conversion rate.
Isak will compete with Hugo Ekitike as Liverpool’s first-choice striker. Ekitike has had an impressive start to life at Anfield, scoring in his first three competitive games.
Speaking to the Reds’ official website for the first time, he said:
“I think I have a lot to give, I think I have a lot to improve. I’m a striker but I always want to give as much as possible to the team, mainly goals but much more than that as well.“I want to win everything. Yeah, [as simple as that].”
Arne Slot’s side have started the defence of their Premier League title brilliantly, winning their first three games – the only side to do so in the division.
Isak could debut when the Reds take on the newly promoted Burnley at Turf Moor after the international break.
