Arsenal or Liverpool: Who is better placed to beat Man City to the title?

Manchester City suffered a big blow to their Premier League title hopes after their 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa on Wednesday. 

The latest defeat means the Cityzens are now winless in their last four league encounters and have dropped down to fourth behind Villa. 

It is still too early to completely write off Pep Guardiola’s side for the title, but they will now have to significantly improve their performances to regain top spot. 

Arsenal and Liverpool have emerged as genuine contenders after their impressive starts to the new campaign. 

The Gunners missed out on the league title last term after a late collapse saw them surrender their eight-point advantage at the summit. 

However, Mikel Arteta’s side are intent on lifting the coveted trophy this season. They are six points ahead of City after losing just one of their opening 15 matches. 

The Londoners spent a club-record fee to sign Declan Rice, and he has made a fantastic start to life at the Emirates Stadium.

There’s better strength in depth across the squad, but they still need a top striker. Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah are good attacking options, but they are nowhere near the levels required.

The Gunners will look to sign a new striker in the January transfer window, but they might need to sell before making a new high-profile signing. 

Arsenal are also starting to concede plenty of goals – as evidenced by Luton Town scoring three against them in midweek. Goalkeeper David Raya produced a dismal performance.

Liverpool also have defensive issues, but they have a world-class goalkeeper in Alisson Becker. The Brazilian is currently out injured, and Caoimhin Kelleher has featured in their recent matches.

The Irishman has been unconvincing with his displays, but Alisson is expected to return soon with his injury thought not to be serious. 

Nobody expected the Merseyside giants to be in the title race after their disappointing 2022-23 season saw them finish fifth in the table.

But after a huge midfield rebuild in the summer, they have been a completely different team. 

The Reds are just two points behind Arsenal and four ahead of City in the Premier League standings. 

Liverpool are a better bet than Arsenal to win the league crown this season. Unlike Arteta, Jurgen Klopp has the experience of winning the Premier League.

Klopp has also missed out on two league trophies by one point. The German knows what it takes to beat City and become the English champions.
