Will Arsenal be out of the title race if Liverpool win on Sunday?

Arsenal face Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday in a fixture which could have major repercussions on their respective title hopes.

The Gunners are five points behind the Merseyside outfit heading into the game and a defeat would blow a major hole in their hopes of winning the league.

Liverpool have been rampant this season, losing just once. Galvanised by manager Jurgen Klopp, who is set to leave at the end of the season, they have looked unstoppable.

Klopp’s departure announcement has spurred more life into this already potent side, making them more menacing than ever.

They made light work of Chelsea in their latest Premier League clash, dominating the Blues and playing them off the park for 90 minutes.

Liverpool made Chelsea look amateurish as they thrashed them 4-1, giving them a preview of what is to come in the League Cup final in three weeks. But first, Arsenal stand in their way.

The Gunners welcome Klopp’s side to the Emirates Stadium tomorrow to lock horns as contenders for the Premier League title.

However, if they fail to beat the roaring Reds, are they still in the title race?

An eight-point gap at this stage of the season will be a tall order to overcome, especially considering Liverpool’s momentum. 

The Reds have won all but one of their last five games (D1). They have six wins and two draws in their past eight matches. It will be hard to stop them going at this pace. 

Arsenal also have to be very wary of Manchester City’s threat. City have been picking up steam after a rocky patch.

A draw between Arsenal and Liverpool will favour the Cityzens, who face Brentford on Monday.

One point might be a decent result for Arsenal as a five-point gap is surmountable. It will at least keep them in the title race for the time being.

A loss at the Emirates would undoubtedly be detrimental to their chances of winning a first title in 20 years.

Gabriel Jesus is back in first-team training and ready to go, but Thomas Partey has suffered another setback and won’t be available. 

On Partey, Arteta said (via Arsenal’s official website): “I’m not a doctor, but I’ll try to [explain]! He felt something again in a very similar area, and he wasn’t able to train the last few days.”

Liverpool

Klopp announced striker Darwin Nunez is touch and go for the game. It is the only major news from the Liverpool camp.

“I don’t know if Darwin is available or not because after 20 minutes somebody stepped on his foot, and it was very painful after the game,” Klopp said (via Liverpool’s official website).

“So, nothing broke, X-ray clear, but [it is] swollen, and we have to see if he can get his foot back into a boot or not because we all know that takes time. I did not see him this morning, so we have to wait a little bit.”

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai have returned from injuries in the past week, and Thiago Alcantara has also joined them after a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
