Youngster who broke Harvey Elliott’s record signs new Liverpool deal

Liverpool have handed talented midfielder Trey Nyoni a long-term contract, coinciding with his 18th birthday.

He joined the Reds in the summer of 2023 from Leicester City and featured for the club’s senior, U21s, U19s, and U18s teams last season.

The youngster broke U21 European Championship Player of the Tournament Harvey Elliott’s record as the youngest player to debut for Liverpool in the FA Cup.

Nyoni came on as a substitute in Liverpool’s triumph over Southampton in the fifth round of the competition in the 2023/24 season.

However, the England U20 midfielder’s record has also been broken by forward Rio Ngumoha, who started the Merseyside outfit’s 3-0 victory over Accrington Stanley last season.

Nyoni featured five times for Arne Slot’s side last term, one of which included a record-breaking appearance in the Champions League.

He was substituted on during the tie against PSV Eindhoven at the age of 17 years and 213 days, making him the youngest-ever player to play for the Reds in a European competition.

Reacting to his new deal, the youngster promised to repay the club’s faith in him.

“It means a lot, obviously supporting the club from young as well,” Nyoni told Liverpoolfc.com.

“So, it’s a great feeling. But now I have to go out and show why I’ve earned this contract. I think it’s just step by step, day by day, just becoming better every day, just improving as a player.

“I’m still young, there’s a lot of improvement. That’s the most important thing. I just have to repay them in that way.”

Nyoni will have a chance to impress Slot when pre-season begins next month, but faces a massive task in cementing a regular place in the starting line-up.

Florian Wirtz’s arrival from Bayer Leverkusen is poised to increase competition for places in the starting XI, making it difficult for the England youth international to get a look-in under Slot.
